The new CEO of CNN wants to make some changes, like ending the OTT breaking news banner.
That’s IT, says Licht
Chris Licht has been CNN’s top dog for just one month, and he’s already making his mark. The new boss wasted no time in letting staff know they needed to cool it with the breaking news banner.
According to Licht, CNN splashes it across the screen way too often, and it should be saved for…you know, actual breaking news. To be honest, he’s got a point. If everything is breaking news, it doesn’t quite have the same effect.
Goodbye for now banner. It will be locked away and saved for super urgent, super important events. CNN’s Washington bureau chief and senior VP, Sam Feist, is now in charge of a team creating some specific breaking news guidelines for staffers to follow. So, next time you see it, you know it’s the real deal.
Chris is changing CNN
Banning the banner – or at least toning it down – isn’t the only change Licht’s planning on making. He’s creating a new organizational structure, revamping the Sunday night lineup, and dialing back partisanship on the air. He wants to see a little less opinion, a little more fact. Probably not a bad idea.
He says, “I know this organization has been through tremendous change. I am approaching this process slowly and thoughtfully as we look at all parts of the operation. We will realign where it makes sense to best serve our people and the business.”
