The tech giants are reportedly collaborating on a future range of foldable goodies.
Folding back the years
The Devil Wears Prada. The Departed. Superbad. The mid-noughties were a golden age for flip phones in cinema. And while the world of iPads, tablets and mobiles is now dominated by flat screens, Apple and LG could be bringing back the flip – or at least the fold.
According to a report from The Elec, a collab is on the horizon for foldable OLED display panels, which would bring a whole new range of iPads and MacBook screens to the marketplace. Maybe low-rise jeans and the Black Eyed Peas are also back on the menu.
What’s the deal?
With a growing expertise in foldable OLED displays, LG is supplying 4K panels to HP this year. Now, another foldable panel is reportedly in the works – this time, with Apple. It’s potentially going to use ultra-thin glass rather than polyimide, and with further reports that Apple is exploring foldable notebooks, we could soon be looking at a new foldable product line.
Dual-use items are currently all the rage, and if Apple is looking at a product that could sit as a notebook and on a full-sized keyboard, excitement will spread among its dedicated customer base. But with the timeframe for the new screens reported to be as far away as 2025, it’s not time to ditch the Surface Pro just yet.
